Course Competencies

  1. Describe the geologic and atmospheric processes that result in natural hazards and disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, landslides, flooding, severe weather, and more

  2. Visualize areas susceptible to natural hazards, the rate that they occur, and the historical context of recent and present disasters compared to historic disasters

  3. Explain the impacts of natural hazards on societies, and how they are managed from a political, social, and ethical perspective

  4. Analyze technological and methodological innovations that enable us to monitor, predict, and warn society of impending disasters and natural hazards

  5. Explain methods used to mitigate damage and vulnerability to natural hazards, how they have evolved over time, and events that have triggered paradigm shifts in how hazards are handled
